A man of modest height yet thin of frame, Mercer has looked like a miserly elder for years now. He is both cautious and cunning in equal parts, with impressive ambition and a mind noteworthy for its prowess in commanding roles. Like all of his heritage, he is cursed with an inability to use a bow.
Mercer was the firstborn of Maevos Kestra and Nariana Melcolm, birthed in the early months of 250 AL. Mercer lead an unremarkable childhood, and inherited his father’s lands at the age of twenty-five, by which time he had been married to Karina of House Hunter for nine years. Their first child, Viserys Mirey Kestra, was nine by that time also.
Mercer was a prolific student in his youth of every field he viewed as important to a Lord. He studied warfare with particular fervor, inspired by the tales of Aegon the Conqueror and the Andals before him. He nurtured this with minor practice, and eventually through connections at his father’s court managed to convince lesser Lords of the Vale to allow him to command troops; this proved a boon, and Mercer used time combating the Mountain Clans to hone his intellect. He later attempted to instill this love into his child.
Mercer was thirty-three and comfortably set in his throne when Aerys II called for the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark. The Kestras were longtime supporters of the Targaryens, but knowing the Warden of the East’s side in the conflict, and the King’s propensity for unstable behavior, Mercer refused to go to battle at all. His son Viserys disagreed, however, and argued frequently with his father on the subject. Karina gave birth to their second child, Markas Aerys Kestra, during this time.
Within days, Viserys became so frustrated with the Lord Kestra that he simply stole away on a horse with some of his father’s troops and made to do join Robert’s soldiers. Viserys’ appearance at Gulltown produced a stir regarding House Kestra, and while the effect of the Kestra men on the battle to open the port is questionable, Viserys died as a result of a festering wound sustained during the fighting.
Mercer grieved his son’s loss, but this inadvertently saved his house from defamation after the war. Mercer easily adapted to Baratheon rule, but worried of Robert’s aptitude to lead. Jon Arryn eyed Mercer’s abstention with suspicion after the war, and so chose not to call on men from Kestra during the Greyjoy Rebellion. Spited, Mercer stayed at home and improved his relations by aiding garrisons in dealing with mountain clan raids. Karina died eight years ago after giving birth to their daughter Joanna.
Today, Mercer smells a change in the airs of the Seven Kingdoms, and one he hopes to turn in his favor. He has set his ambitions on a path of conquest, secretly hoping to one day hold enough power to become a major House of the Mountains of the Moon. Until then he whets his blade and patiently waits.
